The Vernon Community Music School (VCMS) is a non-profit organization and registered charity dedicated to nurturing musical learning, enjoyment and excel-lence. Membership is open to all on payment of a nominal annual registration fee, which helps to cover essential operating expenses. The Board of Directors is elect-ed annually from the membership and the School relies heavily on its members for volunteer help. Your membership is a reflection of your support: it assures the Board, government and granting agencies that the School has broad community involvement.
Various philosophies of instruction give students of all ages an appreciation, en-joyment and knowledge of music. The Music School offers a wide variety of pri-vate and group instruction by well-qualified teachers, thus providing the members of the community with an excellent opportunity for obtaining a good musical edu-cation in the disciplines of their choice.
The school is located in the 1908 Smith House, a designated municipal heritage building, which was purchased in 1982. It is a grand Colonial Revival style home built by Samuel Cameron Smith, one of Vernon’s early and prominent residents. He owned several sawmills, lumber yards, and a sash and door factory, and for many years was Vernon’s largest employer. VCMS is dedicated to preserving as many of the original features of the house as possible, including its original woodwork, stained glass windows and period fixtures. In 2000 a carriage house and stable on the property was restored and converted to recital and studio space.
